Lake Lipno is a great destination for families who want to combine winter sports with a relaxing stay by the water. The surrounding area offers several ski resorts, cross-country skiing trails and places for sledging. When the lake freezes sufficiently and the ice is declared safe, skating on natural ice can also be part of your holiday.
The closest ski area to the resort is Lipno Ski Resort. With a ski school, gentler slopes and the Foxpark beginners’ area, it is particularly popular with families and people learning to ski.
Another option is the smaller Frymburk Skipark. More experienced skiers and families looking for different slopes can also visit the Austrian ski areas of Hochficht and Sternstein.
Before you leave, check which slopes and lifts are open and what the current snow conditions are like.
If you prefer cross-country skiing, groomed trails may be available between Lipno nad Vltavou and Frymburk when there is sufficient snow.
For longer outings, try the Pasečná cross-country area near the Austrian border or the Schöneben Nordic skiing centre in Austria. Both offer a choice of shorter recreational circuits and more demanding trails.
Cross-country skiing depends on natural snowfall. We recommend checking grooming updates and trail conditions before setting off.
Add some sledging or tobogganing to your winter break at designated areas. When conditions allow, part of the Foxpark learning area at Lipno Ski Resort is also used for evening sledging.
If Lake Lipno freezes and an official ice-skating trail is opened, you may be able to skate on the natural ice between Lipno and Frymburk.

One day on the slopes, the next exploring somewhere new. Around Lipno, you will find plenty of places worth visiting in winter. Some operate year-round, while others are outdoor destinations you can enjoy even when there is little or no snow.
Views of the lake and the Šumava Mountains from aboveWalk among the treetops and climb the 40-metre observation tower. The Lipno Treetop Walkway is one of the area’s best-known attractions and is also open during the winter season.
It makes a good outing for families with younger children. The walkway rises gradually and features educational and interactive stops. Availability of the slide and access to the walkway depend on the weather and current operating arrangements.
Fun without putting on skisOpen throughout the year, the bobsleigh attraction in Lipno nad Vltavou offers two different tracks: an alpine coaster and a traditional channel-style run. You control your own speed, so both cautious and more adventurous visitors can enjoy the ride.

An easy outing that needs little planningNearby Frymburk is a good choice for a quieter afternoon. Stroll through its historic centre, see Lake Lipno from a different perspective and stop for something tasty at a local café.
You can combine the visit with a short lakeside walk. Even without snow, the shoreline offers pleasant routes for gentle winter walks. Choose paths according to the weather and walking conditions.
A historic town for a full-day outingYour family winter holiday doesn’t have to revolve entirely around sport. Take a trip to Český Krumlov and explore its historic lanes, the Latrán quarter and the area around the castle.
With children, you might add a museum or an interactive exhibition, for example at the Český Krumlov Monasteries. Winter opening hours vary between attractions, so check your plans in advance.
